Moissanite is silicon carbide, a distinct gemstone material with its own optical properties. Modern jewelry commonly uses lab-created moissanite.

Moissanite is valued for brilliance, intense fire, and high scratch resistance. GIA reports a Mohs hardness of about 9.25. Hardness describes resistance to scratching; it does not mean a stone or setting is unbreakable.

Lab-created origin
The moissanite commonly used in jewelry is grown in controlled conditions. Origin alone does not establish the quality of a finished necklace.
Optical character
Moissanite can show vivid rainbow flashes. Compare clear photos and movement in ordinary lighting to decide whether you like the effect.
Care still matters
High hardness does not protect the chain, coating, or setting from impact and chemicals. Treat the whole necklace with care.
